Do rabbits need their nails trimmed?
The first question that new rabbit owners often ask is “Do I really need to trim my rabbit’s nails?”
The answer to this question is a definite “Yes.” Trimming a rabbit’s nail is mandatory. That’s because your pet bunny lives inside the home with you instead of out in the wild. Domesticated rabbits can’t hop, run, and climb over hard outdoor surfaces like dirt, forest ground, and rocks. As a result, their nails do not get worn down in nature.
So, it’s your responsibility as a loving bunny mommy/daddy to clip their nails.
Failing to do so can result in harm and injury. This may include:
- Accidental skin scratches (ouch!)
- Nail breakage
- Inward curling
- Foot discomfort
- Pain
- Excessive bleeding from overgrown quicks
- Dislocated toes
Of course, we want to avoid putting our bunny babies in any of these anxiety inducing situations. That’s why we recommend using MR.RABBIT Nail Clipper and File. Made with a rubber handle and stainless steel blade, we are proud to offer the best product on the market. There is even a safety guard to prevent accidentally cutting too much, making this kit a must-have for bunny grooming.
How often should I cut my rabbit’s nails?
The next inquiry bunny owners usually have is how often to cut the nails?
Remember, rabbit nails are always growing. They do not reach a certain length and suddenly stop. In fact, rabbits have a total of 18 nails, all of which can get very sharp! It only takes a second for a wiggly rabbit to leave nasty scratch marks on a person’s arms or legs.
But the good news is, this won’t happen if you stay on top of nail trims. A general rule of thumb is to cut rabbit nails every 1 – 2 months.
The more active your bunny is zooming around their enclosure or hopping throughout the house, the quicker they will wear down the sharp tips of their nails. In addition, offering a spot to dig or scratching mat (like the MR. RABBIT Toy Scratch Mat) will prevent future nail problems from developing. Every bunny is different, however. Keep a close eye on their feet. If you start to notice nails protruding past the fluff on their toes, it’s probably time for a nail trim.
